Setting up a staging release is quite a bit trickier than doing a real release. This is probably because we optimize for the real release, which is probably the right priority. At some point in the nebulous future, running a staging release should be simple. Filing, so at the very least, this will become an old bug someday.

Agreed. One thing that should help is implementing the preproduction style overrides: http://hg.mozilla.org/build/buildbot-configs/file/de8369b8cd85/mozilla/preproduction_release_overrides.py http://hg.mozilla.org/build/buildbot-configs/file/de8369b8cd85/mozilla/preproduction_release_overrides-beta.py Having these makes it much less difficult to set-up a staging release. Solving (once and for all) the repository cloning issues are another important part.

I'm going to resolve this. Running a staging release requires a project branch setup, no dev master is required. It's not ideal, but it's going be better when we switch to TC.
